CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the normal functions of the body. With just a light touch, a certified practitioner can release restrictions within the body’s fascia and craniosacral system to enable free functioning of the nervous system, allowing for inherent self-regulation, self-correction, and self-healing. CST has a direct effect on the central nervous system and endocrine system, which consists of all the glands producing hormones that regulate body function. This therapy is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including treating infants in recovery from birth trauma.
During a session, the practitioner will use various holds around the head and along the spine to examine the membranes and movement of fluids in and around the central nervous system. The focus of this practice is to assist in the release of the body’s connective tissue or fascia, which also relieves the compression within the cranial bones, sacrum, and spinal cord. Fascia is a covering found throughout the body, much like a web, surrounding organs, glands, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, brain, and spinal cord. This “webbing” forms a connective network throughout the entire body. When this network gets twisted or torqued, it causes restrictions throughout the nervous system and prevents the free flow of cerebral spinal fluid to nourish the brain and spinal cord.
CST is not advised for the following individuals unless released for treatment by your physician: recent concussion, traumatic brain injury, cerebral swelling, structural defects in the cerebellum, history of a brain aneurysm, blood clots, and any disorder causing instability in cerebrospinal fluid.
